The cultivation of Bourbon Vanilla in pods embodies a particularly strong image of Madagascar: the association of nature and tradition. With care to respect and protect nature, the recommended cultivation methods encourage growers to use free land that is not normally reserved for crop cultivation. This has resulted in an end to pre-cultivation burning-off and systematic replanting of trees, gliricidia and coffee shrubs, and the setting up of growing frames to support vanilla vines.A further innovation is offered by the on-site production of vegetal matter to produce composts that offer natural nourishment to the Vanilla plants. In this way no chemical fertilisers or weed killers are required for the correct development of the plant. All of these simple, rigorous and totally natural agricultural techniques contribute to a perfect protection of the environment and also play a part towards the replanting of the Malgache rainforests. Our cultivation is carried out using traditional non-mechanised techniques at a height of 300 metres above sea level. This is a wooded, mountainous zone, highly isolated, with a unique soil, far from the reach of urban, industrial or agricultural pollution. Our Vanilla vines grow over the trunks of our coffee plants, which, in addition to the support they need in order to develop, provide them with light shade and protection against fungal attacks in the rainy season. Only 8 to 10 pods are retained per flower cluster. A Vanilla vine can offer several clusters and produce 3 to 4 kilos of green pods. In the two months following pollination, the small, irregular or insect-damaged pods are eliminated in order to encourage the finer examples. For this reason, each one of our plants produces just 100 – 120 pods of 15 to 23 centimetres in length, containing thousands of odorant seeds containing vanillin. ![]() We mark each of our green Vanilla pods on the vine with our planters seal: E-JSH to specify the product's origin and to enable it traceability. These are the light coloured marks that appear on certain refined pods. For all these reasons, LAVANY Vanillas are guaranteed to have been refined by NATURAL methods.
